Vinous Neal Martin - 13 Feb 24
The 1983 Coutet contains one of the highest levels of residual sugar at 168g/L, which Dominique Baly was apparently not happy with at the time. It has a straightforward bouquet with light honeyed notes, sunflower seeds and a touch of orange blossom. The palate is nicely balanced with fine acidity, not complex and with a touch of bitterness towards the attenuated finish. This should be better, given the growing season; I suspect it has faded in recent years. Tasted from an ex-château bottle served at the estate.

Bordeaux

Red Bordeaux, globally renowned, is crafted in France’s Bordeaux region from grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. These full-bodied wines feature dark fruit flavours, earthy and spicy notes, and often benefit from ageing. Top producers include Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Lafite Rothschild. White Bordeaux, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, offers styles from crisp to rich, with citrus and tropical notes. Sweet Bordeaux wines, like Sauternes, are famed for their rich sweetness and flavours of apricot and honey, with Château d’Yquem as a leading producer.
